Maria, a five-year-old child, was very happy. She and her father were on their way to Altamira.
"I'm going to Altamira, Altamira. I'm so glad," she cried out. Her father looked at her with a smile.
"Is it a big cave, Father?"
"Yes, Maria, a very big cave. Some people lived in the cave about 10,000 years ago."
Soon they got to the cave.

With a lantern in his hand, Maria's father walked into the dark cave. Maria went after him. How big the cave was!
"I'm going to dig here. Can you help me, Maria?" said her father.
"All right, Father."
She helped her father for some time, but soon she was tired and walked around. Then she saw something on the ceiling. It looked like a picture.

"Up there, Father! Look!" cried Maria.
"Oh, those are just bumps," said her father.
"No, they're pictures, Father! Cows, I think. They're running and jumping. They're all over the ceiling! Please come and look at them."
"All right, then."
He took the lantern and went to Maria. He held the lantern higher. Now he could see much better.

Maria's father almost dropped the lantern.
"Oh, Maria!" he whispered in surprise.
"See, they're pictures," said Maria.
"Yes! No one saw them before. We're the first!"
"There's a bison with a spear in its back."
"They used the natural bumps as a part of the pictures. What a clever idea!"
Maria and her father looked at the pictures on the ceiling for a long time.
